The return of colo?

HomepageArticlesColocationThe return of colo?

Colocation is growing in a big way.  Early adopters of cloud who have had their fill are repatriating some or all of their workloads.  People forget that enterprise IT moves VERY SLOWLY.  It took years to move to the hyperscalers and they've discovered that cloud isn't exactly what they thought it would be.  The need for expertise didn't go away and the costs keep adding.  Cloud still isn't the best solution for all workloads and organizations are developing hybrid strategies with both cloud and colocation.  After a decade of planning and moving to cloud these same organizations are now moving some or all of their loads to colo.  Cloud's weak areas are colo's strongest:  high performance, high capacity, and moving large amounts of data.

Big cloud charges for compute, memory, cpu, disk space, disk io, network egress, account management, and the ability to speak to a human.  If you add all these up, you will often find that colocation is a better value.  Faster hardware because it isn't shared.  Unbilled IO.  As many hard drives as you can get in a rack chassis.  Your iron, your encryption, your security.

No wonder colo is growing FAST.
